Ten years after occupation of Bosnia by Austrian Empire, (E. Ludwig, 1888), they had ambition to check legend of well-known healing thermal water in Fojnica. They made first serious analyses and conclusions of the water: there are radio activities; it belongs to mild materialised water; hydro carbonate – sulphate – calcium – sodium type; it is rich of rare microelements like lithium, strontium, rubidium which are very important for complex healing onto human health. There is a quotation of famous Prof. dr M. Ciglar which confirms the well-known of the water: “ The Nature can not offer better and unique source to rehabilitate our health than natural water rich of various kind of mineralised substances and gases which can improve our healing in remarkable way.”
S According available documents the first organised haling treatment of Fojnica water was 1890, when a French travel writer Mr. Albert Bordeaux mentioned, in his documents, the well-known water and obtaining a Spa in Fojnica. It is possible a small building was built years ago.

Huzbasic spa
The first modern building was built, before the I World War, by Huzbasic family from Fojnica under a sunny side of hill where the spring of the water is. It was in function till the end of the II World War. After the II W.W. it was built a building by Yugoslavia government in 1948. Facilities of the Spa were following: 14 baths, 30 rooms, public kitchen and a restaurant.
Memijia spa
It was also built a building by Memija family after the I World War but after the II W.W. whole healing capacities were put under government patronage.

Special spa
Fojnica city got first frame of a modern Spa centre after building Special Spa for myopathic diseases with 200 beds capacity and all necessary infrastructures in 1967. Hotel “Reumal” was built because of a big interest for this kind of rehabilitation and expanding accommodation capacity of 450 beds in 1979. Hotel “Jezero” was built in 1981 with additional 30 beds. Fojnica became a famous tourist place in a map of ex Yugoslavia healing Centres in middle of 1980. There were about 400 out guests in Fojnica’s private houses. |
